Organizational Overview

At SOS Outreach, we empower our youth to belong everywhere. Whether it’s on the ski slopes, the trail, or at home in their community - we are committed to creating supportive spaces where everyone is welcome.

While providing outdoor recreation experiences for that many kids is impressive, it’s only a partial demonstration of SOS’ impact. Using a unique combination of outdoor adventure experiences, positive adult mentorship, and leadership development opportunities, SOS enables participants to unleash their full potential to thrive. Serving over 3,000 youth each year, across 25 mountain resorts in 15 locations across 10 states, SOS provides opportunities for personal growth for the kids in our communities who need it most.

Our Commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

With a team that cares deeply about social justice and racial justice, we believe that diverse perspectives and backgrounds create a rich work environment and enhance our ability to pursue our mission. We are committed to building an organization with raised consciousness in order to impact how we work with students, as well as how we work together as a team. We hope you will join us as we continue to build a justice-centered organization that fosters a work environment where people from all backgrounds are welcomed and valued.

Volunteer Mentor Overview
Mentors are integral to the success and impact of SOS programs. Mentors are matched with a small group of 3-5 youth whom they will work with for the entirety of the season. Mentors engage with their mentees at 4-5 ride days per season, monthly evening workshops, and service activities throughout the season. Mentors also work closely with their respective program manager to deliver a curriculum to youth aimed at three primary outcomes: 1) to develop positive relationships and a sense of belonging, 2) to enhance self-regulation through social-emotional learning (SEL) skills, and 3) to promote strong character by applying core values and through community service.

New mentors receive 9.5 hours of training ahead of and during the season so that they are equipped to work with SOS youth. Mentors do not need to have a background in youth programs or social services to volunteer - our training and check-ins are designed to support mentors throughout the season.
