What Does an SOS Outreach Mentor Do? A Guide to Mentoring Through Outdoor Adventure

Discover how volunteer mentors help young people build confidence, resilience, and leadership through skiing, snowboarding, and meaningful relationships.

If you love spending time outdoors and want to make a lasting difference in a young person’s life, becoming a volunteer mentor with SOS Outreach could be one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have.

People often imagine mentoring is about having all the answers or teaching someone how to ski or snowboard. In reality, it’s much simpler—and much more impactful.

SOS Outreach mentors show up consistently, encourage young people to step outside their comfort zones, and help them discover confidence that extends far beyond the mountain.

Whether you’re an experienced skier or snowboarder, a first-time volunteer, or simply someone who believes every young person deserves a trusted adult in their corner, mentoring is an opportunity to create lasting change.

What Is an SOS Outreach Mentor?

An SOS Outreach mentor is a caring adult volunteer who builds a supportive relationship with youth participants over the course of the season. Through outdoor adventure, mentors help participants develop confidence, resilience, leadership, and a sense of belonging.

While skiing and snowboarding are central to the experience, the real goal is personal growth.

Every chairlift ride, trail break, lunch conversation, and shared accomplishment becomes an opportunity to encourage, listen, and help young people recognize their own potential.

Mentors aren’t expected to be counselors or teachers. They’re positive role models who create a safe, encouraging environment where participants can challenge themselves and celebrate progress together.

Why Mentors Matter

Every young person benefits from having someone who believes in them.

For many participants, their SOS mentor becomes one of the most consistent and encouraging adults in their lives. Through regular interactions over multiple seasons, mentors help build trust, celebrate successes, and remind participants that setbacks are simply part of learning.

Sometimes the most meaningful moments aren’t reaching the top of a mountain or mastering a new skill.

They’re the conversations on the chairlift.

The encouragement after a difficult run.

The high-five after overcoming fear.

Those moments help build confidence that carries into school, work, relationships, and everyday life.

What Does a Mentor Actually Do?

No two program days are exactly alike, but mentors play a consistent role throughout the season.

A typical mentor might:

  • Welcome participants at the beginning of the day.
  • Help create a positive, inclusive group environment.
  • Ski or snowboard alongside participants.
  • Encourage youth to try new challenges.
  • Lead conversations about confidence, goal-setting, leadership, or resilience.
  • Celebrate progress – big and small.
  • Model patience, kindness, and respect.
  • Help participants feel like they belong.

Some of the most important parts of mentoring happen during ordinary moments: riding the chairlift, sharing lunch, laughing after a fall, or celebrating a personal breakthrough.

Those conversations often become the moments participants remember most.

You Don't Need to Be an Expert

One of the biggest misconceptions about becoming a youth mentor is that you need to be an elite skier, snowboarder, or experienced mentor.

You don’t.

SOS Outreach provides training, resources, and ongoing support to help mentors feel confident in their role.

What matters most is your willingness to:

  • Show up consistently.
  • Listen without judgment.
  • Encourage growth.
  • Be patient.
  • Build positive relationships.

Technical skills can be taught.

Authentic encouragement cannot.

The best mentors are often those who genuinely care about helping young people succeed.

What Skills Make a Great Mentor?

Successful mentors come from all walks of life.

Some are teachers.

Others are engineers, healthcare workers, students, parents, business owners, retirees, or outdoor enthusiasts.

They share a few common qualities:

Patience

Growth takes time. Great mentors understand that every participant learns at their own pace.

Encouragement

Sometimes believing in a young person before they believe in themselves is the greatest gift you can offer.

Reliability

Consistency builds trust. Simply showing up each program day makes a lasting difference.

Curiosity

The best mentors ask questions, listen carefully, and enjoy learning about the young people they support.

Positivity

A supportive attitude can transform challenges into opportunities for growth.

What You'll Gain as a Mentor

While mentoring is about supporting youth, volunteers often say they receive just as much as they give.

Many mentors describe the experience as one of the most meaningful parts of their year.

As an SOS Outreach mentor, you may:

  • Build lifelong friendships.
  • Strengthen your leadership and communication skills.
  • Connect with your local outdoor community.
  • Gain a renewed appreciation for the mountains.
  • Experience the joy of helping someone accomplish something they once thought was impossible.

Watching a participant conquer a fear, celebrate a personal milestone, or return the following season with newfound confidence is incredibly rewarding.

Who Can Become a Volunteer Mentor?

SOS Outreach welcomes volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds.

Whether you’re a lifelong skier, an occasional snowboarder, or someone looking for a meaningful way to give back, mentoring opportunities exist for people who are passionate about supporting young people.

Mentors should be:

  • Dependable and positive.
  • Comfortable participating in outdoor winter activities.
  • An intermediate skier or snowboarder.
  • Committed to creating an inclusive environment.
  • Willing to complete mentor training and required screening.
  • Able to pass a background check.
  • Excited to help young people grow.

No previous mentoring experience is required.

The Lasting Impact of Mentorship

A season on the mountain can become something much bigger.

Participants often return year after year, progressing through SOS Outreach programs while building stronger relationships with mentors and developing greater confidence.

Many alumni continue their leadership journey by returning as mentors, volunteers, or advocates in their own communities.

This ripple effect is what makes mentorship so powerful.

One caring adult can help shape a young person’s future—and that young person may someday do the same for someone else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need mentoring experience?

No. SOS Outreach provides training and ongoing support to help you succeed.

Do I have to be an expert skier or snowboarder?

No. Mentors should be intermediate skiers or riders (able to ride blue squares). While comfort participating in winter outdoor activities is important, mentors are valued for their ability to build relationships and encourage young people—not for their athletic ability.

How much time does mentoring require?

Mentoring with SOS is a big commitment and is a minimum of 20 hours per winter season.
Time commitments vary by program and community. Your local SOS Outreach team will explain the schedule, training, and expectations before you volunteer.

What ages do mentors work with?

Participants range from 4th-12th grade depending on the program, with opportunities to mentor youth as they develop confidence and leadership over multiple seasons.

Why volunteer with SOS Outreach?

Because every young person deserves a trusted adult who believes in their potential—and every mentor has the opportunity to help shape a life through meaningful relationships and unforgettable outdoor experiences.
