Overview

Mentors are integral to the success and impact of SOS programs. Mentors are matched with a small group of 3-5 youth whom they will work with for the entirety of the season. Mentors engage with their mentees at 5 ride days per season, 2-5 evening workshops, and 2 service activities throughout the season. Mentors also work closely with their respective program manager to deliver a curriculum to youth aimed at three primary outcomes:

1) to develop positive relationships and a sense of belonging
2) to enhance self-regulation through social-emotional learning (SEL) skills
3) to promote strong character by applying core values and through community service.

Mentors receive 10 hours of training ahead of and during the season so that they are equipped to work with SOS youth. Mentors do not need to have a background in youth programs or social services to volunteer – our training and check-ins are designed to support mentors throughout the season.

What to Expect

/01

Apply

SOS starts recruiting volunteers in August every year. If you’re interested in volunteering, you’ll need to go through an interview process with your local program manager and undergo a thorough background check that includes fingerprinting.

/02

Commit

Volunteer mentors are an integral part of our program, and we expect them to take their commitment seriously. The volunteer season usually runs from mid-October to the beginning of May. During this time, volunteers should be available to commit one day of their weekend for five weekends, as well as approximately 5-8 hours of off-mountain activities per month.

/03

Shred

As a volunteer, you’ll need to be comfortable on blue terrain, whether skiing or snowboarding. We ask that all our volunteers have this level of proficiency to ensure everyone’s safety and make the most of the program.
